Posted by Mary Farrell on Friday, October 11th, Savor the memories of a young, precocious girl on the s, so fresh and real you can taste the Niagra Falls snow and feel the magic of her strength, invincibilty and intelligence. Too Close To The Falls was hard to come by, since our system has only a few copies left. Most of our members had a chance to finish it. The general consensus was we really liked the story, mostly because it was in a child's voice with a child's perceptions and naivety.

We found the details made each story come alive and wondered how Catherine Gildiner could remember so many vibrant details.

We agreed that most of us can remember SOME stories from our very young lives in extreme detail, if the event was a major one, but we still wondered how Gildiner could remember so very many of her daily life details. We found that her memories fondly triggered our own memories from those years, such as, tv jingles and playing unsupervised in a seemingly more innocent world. We liked her eccentric, one-of-a-kind set of parents and loved Roy, the illiterate Black delivery man, for whom 4-year-old Catherine would read the map.

We loved their adventures on, literally, the wrong side of the tracks. We marveled at her sense of justice and rooted for her moral stand and choice of heroes, especially, because the world as-we-know-it would never choose those people.

We liked the stories about the Indian reservation and the denizen of the town dump. We loved her self-confidence in knowing she would win the contest, which, of course, she didn't win. The extra per mile charges can add up quickly, so be sure to ask in advance.

Ensure that the car rental company notes on the rental agreement that they authorize you to take the car into Canada. You may be asked by Customs when entering Canada, or when re-entering the US, for this documentation. Of course you should visit Toronto!!! It is only 80 miles from Niagara Falls. You could spend an entire week in Toronto and still have plenty to see and do!!!

Thank you for your excellent advice on the rental car! I'm very glad you enlightened me on this!

Are there any rental car companies that you can recommend for a Buffalo to Toronto trek? I am also flying to buffalo and renting a car to drive to Toronto. I rented thru Enterprise, no extra charges to go into Canada , they said it happens all the time.

See a Problem?

Just need to make sure they know so they can note it on the rental contract for crossing the border. They were very helpful and always get fabulour service from them. Both allow their cars across the border. You could spend a week in Toronto and still have plenty to see and do. Philly is good for days, and Washington is good for a days.

Quite frankly I would skip the Toronto Zoo If you want things closer to Niagara, I suggest Niagara on the Lake , nice historic town. Exposed to such a wide variety of unwitting mentors who either taught her something positive, or showed her in one way or another-which way not to go. With parents who loved and doted on her in their own unique ways, her independent spirit was somehow nurtured, or at least encouraged. Or perhaps it was a mix of independence and survival.

Either way, it was amazing to hear about how resilient this child was no matter what she could not unsee or hear-and choose to be a successful and hopefully whole and happy adult. What did you love best about Too Close to the Falls? The characters are great and the perspective is as well! I grew up not too far away from Niagara Falls so am familiar with the landscape and culture. Fun, witty book that was well worded! Who was your favorite character and why?
